L’ÎLE-CADIEUX:
It was on March 21, 1922 that the small territory of île Cadieux was incorporated as a town. If this date marks the official creation of the town, the island, meanwhile, has been known and frequented for centuries.
Located on the route of the Ottawa River to the St. Lawrence River, in the widening of Lake of Two Mountains, this continental island has always served as a place of respite for the indigenous communities and travellers who used this important route of communication after having faced the rapids of the river at Carillon.
Renowned for its abundant and diverse flora and fauna, the island has always been recognized as a haven of peace.
The paradisiacal aspect of the island is what attracted the first vacationers to come to the place during the summer season. Over the years, several of them eventually settled permanently.
For centuries, whether as a result of passing travelers, vacationers or the art of living developed by several generations of residents, the natural landscape of the place has been transformed into what is now called a cultural landscape, that is to say a humanized landscape that preserves the material and intangible traces of its evolution and history.
To mark the 100th anniversary of its incorporation, the Town of Île-Cadieux is pleased to present this permanent exhibition, which is a tribute to the history and heritage of this community, while highlighting the distinctive island character of its citizens of yesterday, today and tomorrow.
